Course description:

The course is based on a structural and functional approach to grammar. The content is a description of the structure of English sentences: elements of clause structure, their relative positions, their realisations and semantic functions. Simple clauses and clause complexes are defined; in clause complexes attention is given to both syntactic and logico-semantic relations between clauses. We examine the incorporation of clauses within structures of higher ranks – texts, with special emphasis on functional sentence perspective in terms of thematic structure and information structure in individual sentences as well as texts.
